'The Phoenix Project' Book Review

I've decided to start this blog by introducing you to books that greatly influenced my career and I think that you will find useful in developing your career as well. Methodology books have taught me important lessons that have contributed greatly to advancing my skills and productivity. I hope that they do the same for you.

The Phoenix Project by Gene Kim

This is the book that changed how I thought about I.T.  It's the application of the manufacturing principles from Eliyahu M. Goldratt's book, The Goal,  to information technology. It introduces great ideas from such classics as the Toyota Production System and Walter Deming Plan-Do-Check-Act workflow.

I like how it frames I.T. roles from a cost center to being part of the product. I was brought up being told that my profession was an expense, a necessary evil, that did not contribute to the profitability of the company. This book puts the record straight. I could go on for pages about everything that is good about this book, but I'll let you experience it for yourself. This is a real gem for the DevOps Engineer and a light read.
